Adams: "The team spirit is very good."

24 October 2022

Derek Adams is hoping his side can take the confidence gained from Saturday’s victory into the midweek fixture at Cheltenham.

The Shrimps picked up a crucial three points at the weekend thanks to a 1-0 win over Barnsley at the Mazuma Stadium, and Adams is hoping his side can build on that result – starting with Tuesday night’s trip to the Completely Suzuki Stadium.

“Firstly, the only important thing for all of us is to win football matches,” he said.

“Yes, a draw may be good at times depending on your opponents or the time in the game, but the three points certainly gets you quickly up the table.

"You only have to look at where we could have been if we had a couple more wins on the board.

“We take it a game at a time, but we’ll always look at the table and see how many teams we can gain ground on any given day should we go on and win the match.

"We’ve cut the gap between ourselves and 16th place to five points, so that is something we’re looking at and hoping to build on.

“After Saturday’s result in particular, the team spirit is very good and the players have got that desire to do well.”

Kieran Phillips grabbed his fourth league goal of the season on Saturday, and Adams was pleased to see him get back on the scoresheet.

“He’s a goal scorer who gets himself into those positions to score,” he said.

“Strikers will go through periods where they score loads of goals and will then go on and not score many, but Kieran is in a rich vein of form at the moment, which is good to see.

"We’re obviously looking for others to get in amongst the goals as well, which will help the team moving forwards.

“We’re going into a big game against Cheltenham; a number of wins can push you up the table quite quickly, and this is something we’ll be looking to achieve on Tuesday night.”
