Adams looking to utilise squad depth against Hartlepool

Derek Adams says those players wanting and needing game time will be given the opportunity in Tuesday night’s Papa John’s Trophy game.

In their opening game of the competition against Everton U21s, Morecambe managed to pick up the extra point after winning on penalties.

Given the demanding schedule with games in Sky Bet League One, the Carabao Cup and the EFL Trophy coming thick and fast, Adams says it’s only right to make changes.

“We will change the team about on Tuesday night,” he confirmed.

“It’s only right we do that because we’ve got a lot of fixtures to play in a short space of time, we’ve got players who want game time and need game time, we’ll do that on Tuesday night.

“We want to try and progress through the section, but coming off Saturday’s result against Forest Green, we’ll look at changing the squad up.

“What it does give to the ones [coming in] is a home game to play at the home stadium and gives themselves 90 minutes.”

Adams and the team will be hoping to maintain their unbeaten run in the cup competitions as the Pools make the journey to the Mazuma, and the gaffer reiterated his desire to triumph over the group leaders.

“It’s an opportunity for us to get the three points, to try and progress,” he explained.

“Hartlepool won their first game, so they’re top of the section.

“Both sides will be going for it because we understand if both teams can win the game, there’s obviously the possibility they’re going to get through to the next round.”
