Adams pleased with the way his side competed

13 September 2022

Manager Derek Adams says his side competed well for long periods of the game in Tuesday night’s defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Shrimps were beaten 3-0 at the Mazuma Stadium after goals from Josh Windass, George Byers and Michael Smith notched to give the Owls all three point, but the gaffer says his team could have scored a couple of goals on a different night.

“It was always going to be a difficult game for us, we were playing against Sheffield Wednesday but I thought we competed really well for long periods in the game,” said Adams.

“We limited them to very few opportunities but when they did come about, they took them, we had two really good opportunities in the game through Kieran Phillips and Ryan Delaney.

“We could have scored a couple of goals from that and that would have given us confidence, but when we got into good positions, we gave the ball away, and at this level, you can’t do that.”

Despite the result, Adams is confident that when the Shrimps come up against teams in and around them, they will walk away with the win.

“They [Sheffield Wednesday] are a very, very good side, I said that to the players after the game, their quality shone through,” he added.

“You can’t expect to beat a team when they are on form, and I thought they were on form tonight, they passed the ball, they zipped it about, unfortunately they have such a strong squad.

“I thought my players showed good shape at times and were a threat, and in coming weeks when we have easier fixtures to play, it will be better for us.”
