Good preparation paid off for Smith

20 September 2022

Goalkeeper Adam Smith admits preparations paid off ahead of tonight's clash with Hartlepool United.

Whilst the game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes, Smith proved to be the hero in the resulting penalty shoot-out.

The 29-year-old saved the visitors' first two penalties, from Euan Murray and David Ferguson respectively, and he believes the preparation in the build-up to the fixture played its part.

"It's credit to Baz [Barry Roche], he's done his research before.

"I had a bottle with everyone [the takers] on and he got them all right, and luckily enough I saved two of them.

"You've got to do things right, we've done it right, we don't go into any game thinking we'll lose this game, it's not the right mentality, we go in wanting to win every game.

"It's part of being a footballer, you've got to do what you've got to do to pick up points and luckily enough, that helped us tonight to get the extra point.

"It's been a good standard of pens, I don't have a decent view on the sideline, but its gone over the line and it's a good pen if it goes in!"

Smith has featured in both Papa John's Trophy games so far this season, as well as a short cameo in the league after replacing Connor Ripley who picked up an injury away to Bristol Rovers.

Despite this, the goalkeeper admits he's working hard behind the scenes to make sure he'll always be ready when called upon.

He explained: "No-one wants to sit around, and that's the way it should be.

"I don't know anyone who is happy to sit around, everyone wants to play games and I've got to just be ready when called upon.

"If it's tonight, next week or next month, I've just got to keep doing the right things and, when the opportunity comes, take it.

"I do everything right, everyone else has been doing everything right for when that opportunity comes, because we don't know when the next one's going to be.

"We don't know when we're going to be picked, what's happening, we've just got to keep working hard everyday and I'm sure the lads showed that tonight."
