Report: Penrith 7-2 Shrimps Women

25 September 2022

The Shrimps left Penrith empty handed despite an encouraging performance from Ben Anderson’s side.

Two goals each meant the score was level at the break, but five goals in the second-half for the hosts ensured the points stayed in Cumbria.

Morecambe were quickest out of the traps and broke the deadlock on eight minutes through Olivia Thompson, whose top class finish fired the Shrimps ahead.

Confidence grew within the Morecambe ranks with two chances in three minutes; firstly, Colby Davidson looked to threaten the Penrith defence but was flagged offside, before Davidson again looked to pounce on a Natasha Walker through ball, but the hosts were able to clear their lines.

Two minutes later and the Cumbrians found an equaliser following some neat play from the back, though Morecambe looked for an immediate response through Lily Smith, who forced Penrith’s goalkeeper into a terrific save.

Just before the half-hour mark, it was Erin Lightfoot called into action who denied the home side, though a minute later, Fawkes made no mistake and found the back of the net.

Penrith looked to head into the break in front, but Gabrielle Johnson had other ideas; A fantastic assist by captain Davidson was capitalised on by the number eight to score a deserved equaliser for Morecambe.

Half-time: Penrith 2-2 Morecambe

In what was a close opening to the second-half, Lightfoot was the first ‘keeper called upon after the Shrimps’ stopper pulled off a wonderful save to deny Penrith from a free-kick on 65 minutes.

Lightfoot could do nothing to deny the hosts two minutes later however, as Forster reinstated Penrith’s lead.

Despite a few chances for Morecambe, the home side secured the points with four quick fire goals in the final 10 minutes.

Questions were asked by the Shrimps, who seemed convinced three of the four finishes were offside, but the referee disagreed, as Penrith registered their third win of the campaign.
