Report | Morecambe 3 Lincoln City 2

29 April 2023

Morecambe produced an excellent comeback from two goals down to beat Lincoln City 3-2 at the Mazuma Stadium.

Goals from Lasse Sorensen and Matty Virtue put City 2-0 up before second half goals from Oumar Niasse and a Cole Stockton brace completed the comeback.

After a closely contested opening 25 minutes, Stockton fashioned the first opening for the Shrimps when he worked some space for himself on the edge of the box, but saw his drilled effort go just wide of Carl Rushworth’s post.

Lincoln created a chance of their own moments later as Virtue’s shot was comfortably held by Connor Ripley.

Morecambe came close to opening the scoring just before the half-hour mark when Jensen Weir and Arthur Gnahoua exchanged passes before Weir was denied at close range by Rushworth.

The Imps opened the scoring a minute later when the ball fell to Sorensen on the right-hand side of the penalty area whose shot across goal found the bottom-left corner.

Derek Adams' side came close again when the ball was worked to Weir on the edge of the area and the Morecambe man fired his effort just wide.

Connor Ripley pulled off a fantastic save to stop Lincoln doubling their lead moments before the break as he kept out Danny Mandroiu’s effort at full stretch.

The Imps doubled their lead three minutes into the second half when the ball was cut back to Virtue who found the bottom left corner from the edge of the area.

Morecambe got themselves straight back into the contest when Stockton’s superb looping effort beat Rushworth to pull one back for the Shrimps.

Dan Crowley came agonisingly close to levelling the scores on the hour mark when he wriggled himself into some space inside the penalty area, but his low effort hit the post.

The visitors hit the post themselves five minutes later when Mandroiu raced in on goal and his effort hit the outside of the post and went wide.

Morecambe levelled the scoring seconds later when Niasse beat Rushworth to a high loose ball and headed home from the edge of the area.

The Imps hit the woodwork for the second time when a curling cross from the left was met by Paudie O’Connor who headed his effort onto the crossbar.

The comeback was complete five minutes from time when Ash Hunter curled a free kick from midway inside the Lincoln half straight onto the head of Stockton who headed into the top right corner of the Imps net.
