The Shrimps defeat Wycombe Wanderers for a place in the FA Cup third round

2 December 2023

Two goals either side of half-time without reply secure the Shrimps a place in the FA Cup third round.

Eli King netted his first in a Morecambe shirt before Tom Bloxham rounded off the scoring with a well-struck side-footed volley.

Adam Smith was called into action early on after Killian Phillips struck from distance, his powerful effort was turned behind by Smith, leading to the first corner of the game for the hosts which came to nothing.

Morecambe’s first sight on goal came six minutes later as Adam Mayor’s corner was met by the head of Farrend Rawson, though he couldn’t keep his header down.

A well-worked move midway through the first half nearly saw Phillips break through one-on-one against Smith, but a vital Jacob Bedeau clearance in the nick of time denied the midfielder a golden chance.

After some neat one-two player between Lyle Taylor and Kian Breckin, the latter was presented with an opportunity, only to shoot straight at Smith who made an easy save.

Following a spell of pressure, the Shrimps took the lead on 38 minutes. A second corner in quick succession was played deep toward the back post and there was King to head home from close range.

Half-time: Wycombe Wanderers 0 Morecambe 1

Nine minutes into the second half, JJ McKiernan stung the palms of Ravizzoli with a strike from distance after the home goalkeeper initially gifted possession to Mayor.

Moments later, the Shrimps doubled the advantage. Michael Mellon crossed from the left and put it on a plate for Bloxham at the back post who produced a wonderful side-footed finish which left Ravizzoli with no chance.

After setting up our second, Mellon came agonisingly close to making it three for the Shrimps, though he could only shoot wide of the target from inside the box.

Looking for a response with time ticking on, Lyle Taylor struck a volley on the angle from the right-hand side of the Morecambe box, but it was off target and rolled wide of the far post.

With just over 10 minutes of normal left to play, the Shrimps looked to wrap things up as Mayor’s cross was fizzed across the box into the path of Mellon, but the Burnley loanee arrived a little too late on the scene as the ball ran beyond him.
