Adams: We’ve Got To Try And Cause An Upset

14 February 2023

Derek Adams admits the Shrimps must go to Hillsborough and try to cause an upset against an in-form Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls haven’t lost a league game since October, a 2-1 defeat away at Plymouth Argyle, and Darren Moore’s men will be facing Morecambe with the Sky Bet League One summit in the back of their minds.

Adams’ side travelled to Hillsborough in November's FA Cup first round match, and he hopes the familiarity can help the Shrimps stun the promotion hopefuls.

“As a team, we’ve got to go there and try and cause an upset,” he said.

“Going there, we know the venue, even though it wasn’t full the night we were there.

“Now the season ticket holders can come back in and come to the game, but we understand the players they have, we know Darren Moore has done an excellent job there, he has had the resources to do that, we understand.

“I’ve got huge respect for the teams in this division that have got fantastic fan bases, history and the balance sheet to prove that.

“That isn’t to say it always goes their way, we’ve had shocks in the past, we go there, and it would be a shock for us to win, we understand that.”

After Tuesday night’s game, the Shrimps will have faced Ipswich Town, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday in consecutive away fixtures.

The gaffer feels experiences like these can help with all-important togetherness and team spirit, which he’s admitted previously, his team has in abundance.

“It takes you a long way, there is no doubt about it” Adams added.

“A togetherness and a team spirit in a team can take you a long, long way, I’ve seen that in the past.

“Yes, we need players with ability to open up defences and score goals, but that ethos of everyone working in the same direction certainly helps you.”
