Match Preview | Fleetwood Town (A)

24 February 2023

The Shrimps look to make it back-to-back Sky Bet League One wins on Saturday 25 February when they travel to Fleetwood Town.

Morecambe picked up maximum points on Tuesday night with a 1-0 win over Port Vale. Adam Mayor’s superb second half strike was the difference between the two sides.

Fleetwood were also in action in midweek, they beat Cambridge United 1-0 at Highbury.

The Opposition

The Cods currently sit 13th in League One with nine wins, 12 draws and 11 defeats so far this season.

Fleetwood have been in the EFL since their promotion in 2012. Town reached League One two years later when they won the 2014 League Two play-off final. The Cods have been in League One since their promotion in 2014 and came close to promotion to the Championship in 2020, but had to settle for the play-offs where they were beaten by Wycombe Wanderers in the semi-final.

Head Coach Scott Brown needs no introduction having spent the majority of his career playing as a midfielder for Celtic in Scotland. Brown retired from football in 2022 and was appointed as Fleetwood Head Coach in May, his first full time job in the EFL.

Key Players

Defender Shaun Rooney is Fleetwood’s top scorer this season with six goals and three assists. His goal was the difference in The Cods’ 1-0 win over Cambridge United in midweek. Fleetwood is the 26-year-old’s second club in England after York City, having spent his career to date in Scotland playing for Dunfermline Athletic, Queen of the South, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and St Johnstone.

January addition Jack Marriott knows what it takes to play in League One. The striker has spent his career scoring prolifically for Luton Town, Peterborough United, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday. Marriott has already begun to show his quality with an assist against Burton in early February and the 29-year-old will continue to be a threat going forward for Fleetwood this season.

Former Morecambe man Carlos Mendes Gomes has six goals and two assists for The Cods this season. The winger was the Shrimps' Supporters’ Player of the Season in 2021 and scored a 107th minute penalty in the 2021 League Two play-off final to secure Morecambe’s place in League One. Following his departure from the Mazuma, Mendes Gomes joined Luton and was loaned to Fleetwood in August.

Derek Adams’ Thoughts

Shrimps' boss Derek Adams is looking forward to his side playing in front of a sold out away end on Saturday.

“They’ll create a very good atmosphere,” he said.

“We’ve got huge support with us, we’ve sold out our allocation and it’s just along the coast from us and we’re looking forward to the game.

"The supporters were very vocal the other night and that really does help the players.”

Team News

Derek Adams says Cole Stockton should be available on Saturday after he was substituted off early in the game against Port Vale on Tuesday.

Otherwise, the Shrimps boss has a fully fit squad to choose from.

Meet The Officials

Andy Davies will referee Saturday’s Lancashire derby and will be assisted by Mark Pottage and Robert Merchant alongside fourth official Aaron Jackson.

Davies has officiated 16 games this season, 11 in the Championship, two in League One and League Two respectively and one in the Carabao Cup.

The official last refereed Morecambe in May 2018, a 0-0 draw away against Coventry City in League Two.
