Match Preview | Peterborough United (H)

17 February 2023

The Shrimps will aim to make it 10 unbeaten at the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday 18 February with Peterborough United the visitors.

Last time out, Morecambe were beaten 3-0 by Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night. In their last game on home soil, Cole Stockton’s late equaliser earned the Shrimps a point in a 1-1 draw against Forest Green.

The Posh make their second trip to Lancashire in a week after they were beaten 1-0 by Fleetwood Town at Highbury on Tuesday night.

The Opposition

United currently sit ninth in Sky Bet League One with 14 wins, two draws and 13 defeats from 29 games.

The Cambridgeshire side are back in the third tier following their relegation from the Championship last season. Despite their drop, the Posh have enjoyed their fair share of success at this level. They finished runners up in 2009 and 2021, and won the League One play-offs in 1992 and 2011 respectively. Peterborough also won the Papa Johns Trophy in 2014 when they beat Chesterfield in the final.

The Posh are managed by Darren Ferguson, who is in his fourth spell in charge at The Weston Homes Stadium. Ferguson guided United to promotion to the Championship in his first spell in 2009. In his second spell, he enjoyed a second promotion to the second tier through the play-offs in 2011. The Scotsman’s third spell also included a promotion in 2021, again, to the Championship. The 51-year-old left his post in February 2022, only to return less than a year later in January 2023.

Key Players

Striker Johnson Clarke-Harris is in red hot form in front of goal this season. The centre forward has scored 16 goals so far and picked up four assists. The 28-year-old moved to Cambridgeshire in 2020 after he scored 24 goals in 42 appearances for Bristol Rovers in the 2019-20 season. Since joining Peterborough, he’s scored 59 goals in 113 appearances.

Winger Joe Ward is topping the assist charts for the Posh this season. The 27-year-old has set up seven goals and has netted three times to-date. Ward began his career at Chelmsford City and spent time at Lincoln City and Woking before joining Peterborough in 2018.

Forward Ephron Mason-Clarke has settled well into EFL life since joining the Posh at the start of the campaign. Before making the step up to League One, the 23-year-old spent six years at Barnet. This season, Mason-Clark has scored five goals and provided three assists.

Darren Ferguson’s Thoughts

Posh boss Darren Ferguson is expecting a difficult game at the Mazuma considering the Shrimps' recent home form.

“It’s strange the way their results have gone,” he said.

“They’ve played some of the top teams in the division away, but their home form has been really strong, probably one of the strongest in the league.

“It’s going to be another tough game, we know that."

Team News

Ahead of the game, manager Derek Adams confirmed Donald Love is the only player likely to miss out through injury.

Meet The Officials

Darren Handley will referee the game at the Mazuma on Saturday. He will be assisted by linesmen Thomas Harty and Paul Stonier as well as fourth official Paul Newhouse.

Handley has officiated 13 games this season, seven in League Two, three in League One, two in the Papa Johns Trophy and one in Premier League 2.

The official has already taken charge of Morecambe this season, a 1-1 draw away at Burton Albion in October.
