Match Preview | Sheffield Wednesday (A)

14 February 2023

The Shrimps head to South Yorkshire on Tuesday 14 February to face Sheffield Wednesday in Sky Bet League One.

Last time out, Morecambe stretched their unbeaten run at the Mazuma Stadium to nine games with a 1-1 draw against Forest Green Rovers on Saturday; Cole Stockton’s late equaliser earned the Shrimps a point.

Sheffield Wednesday were also in action on Saturday, they drew 2-2 away from home against Ipswich Town.

The Opposition

Wednesday currently sit second in League One with 18 wins, eight draws and three defeats from 29 games this season.

The Owls are four-time First Division winners as well as five-time Second Division winners. Wednesday have also won the FA Cup three times, most recently in 1996 when they beat Wolves 2-1 in the final.

The Owls are managed by Darren Moore who played as a centre back for Torquay, Doncaster Rovers, Bradford City, Portsmouth and West Brom to name a few. Moore began his managerial career in 2018 when he was appointed boss at West Brom. The 48-year-old left The Hawthorns in 2019 before taking charge at Doncaster Rovers. In 2021, Moore left Doncaster to take the Sheffield Wednesday vacancy.

Key Players

Josh Windass has proven himself as a threat for Wednesday this campaign. The striker has scored 11 goals and picked up seven assists so far, including two assists against Ipswich Tpwm at the weekend. Before moving to South Yorkshire, the 29-year-old spent time playing for Accrington Stanley, Rangers and Wigan Athletic.

Windass’ strike partner Michael Smith is Wednesday’s top scorer alongside Windass with 11 goals and three assists. Smith netted his eleventh of the season in Saturday’s draw against The Tractor Boys. The 31-year-old brings goals and experience to Darren Moore’s side having played across the EFL for Charlton Athletic, Swindon Town, Portsmouth, Northampton Town and, most recently, Rotherham.

Midfielder Barry Bannan has also been one of the keys to The Owls success this season with four goals and six assists. The Scotsman has spent time at the top level with Aston Villa as well as spells with Blackpool, Leeds United, Crystal Palace and Bolton Wanderers. The 33-year-old has also represented his country 27 times at senior level.

Derek Adams’ Thoughts

Shrimps' boss Derek Adams wants to utilise the togetherness within the squad to achieve a positive result on Tuesday night.

“Togetherness and team spirit can take you a long, long way,” he said.

“We need players with ability to open up defences and score goals, but that ethos of everyone working in the same direction certainly helps you.”

Team News

Donald Love and Ryan Cooney are doubtful for Tuesday’s trip to Hillsborough following injuries sustained during Saturday's draw with Forest Green Rovers, while Courtney Duffus remains sidelined.

Meet The Officials

Robert Lewis will referee Tuesday’s fixture and will be assisted by Ian Smedley and Robert Atkin with Christopher Ward completing the line-up as fourth official.

Lewis has taken charge of 23 games this season, ten in League Two, nine in League One, two in the Papa Johns Trophy and one in each of the FA and Carabao Cups.

The official last took charge of a Shrimps game in April 2022, a 2-1 win against Oxford at the Mazuma Stadium.
