Report | Morecambe 1 Charlton Athletic 4

14 March 2023

The Shrimps fell to a 4-1 home defeat against Charlton Athletic at the Mazuma Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Addicks were 3-0 up at half-time after goals from Miles Leaburn and a Corey Blackett-Taylor brace.

Donald Love got one back for the Shrimps on the hour mark before Scott Fraser rounded off the scoring for the Addicks.

After a cagey opening 15 minutes, the visitors took the lead when Leaburn controlled a loose ball in the box and volleyed home from close range.

The visitors came close to doubling their lead five minutes later when the ball was worked to Corey Blackett-Taylor who was denied at the near-post by Connor Ripley.

Charlton got a second from the resulting corner when Leaburn’s header across the box was tapped home by Blackett-Taylor.

Morecambe came close to pulling one back ten minutes before the break when Ash Hunter’s free kick from the left curled just wide of the visitors’ post.

The Addicks got their third when Tyreece Campbell crossed into the near post to find Blackett-Taylor who made no mistake from close range.

The Shrimps almost got themselves back into the game in first half stoppage time when another excellent ball from the left by Hunter, but it was just too deep for Farrend Rawson to head home.

Hunter continued to impress down the left in the second half for the Shrimps and found Oumar Niasse in the box whose shot on the spin was saved well by Charlton goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

Morecambe got themselves back into the game when Niasse beat his man on the left, fed the ball inside to Dan Crowley who managed to find Donald Love in acres of space down the right who rifled the ball into the bottom-left corner.

Derek Adams’ side almost netted a second when the ball was worked to Crowley on the edge of the area, but the midfielder curled his effort narrowly wide.

Charlton got a fourth 22 minutes from time when the ball was fed to Scott Fraser who curled the ball into the far corner.

Rawson came close to a Morecambe second when he met Liam Gibson’s cross with his head, but saw his effort float wide with just under 10 minutes of normal time to play.
