Report | Morecambe 5 Workington Reds Ladies 1

26 March 2023

It was a five star display from Morecambe FC Women who overcame Workington Reds Ladies by five goals to one at the Mazuma Stadium.

Three goals courtesy of Yasmine Swarbrick, one from Nat Broad and an own goal proved enough for the Shrimps despite Chloe Henderson's first half equaliser.

Morecambe came close on 17 minutes when Broad’s cross was met by a Shrimps’ player, though the opposition were just able to clear their lines.

Moments later, Henderson fired an effort from distance, though it failed to find the target and sailed harmlessly over.

The home side continued to apply the pressure – this time Erin Menzies picking up the ball at the back post, but her effort flew over the bar.

Morecambe’s pressure paid off on 23 minutes when a first ball wasn’t dealt with, and Swarbrick found herself in the right place at the right time to convert.

Six minutes later and, following a clinical counterattack, Workington were level after Henderson finished off the move with a finish into the bottom-right corner.

An immediate response saw the Shrimps take the lead again, and it was Swarbrick who netted hers, and Morecambe’s, second of the game – after working the ball terrifically down the right, Broad played in Swarbrick tremendously and the striker made no mistake.

Five minutes before the break and the Shrimps scored a third courtesy of a Workington player who, following a defensive mix up, converted into her own goal.

In what was a cagey opening five minutes to the second half, Workington did have the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled out for an offside in the build-up.

A minute later, Broad came close directly from a corner, but her cross clipped the post and rolled away to safety.

The visitors nearly pulled one back when Keeley Holliday struck from the edge of the box, but Erin Lightfoot pulled off a comfortable save.

Broad again nearly extended the home side’s advantage with 13 to play, but Laura Miller did well to keep out the powerful strike.

The number nine wouldn’t be denied for much longer – after taking a deflection, the ball fell to Broad at the back post who slotted home on 80 minutes.

With seconds to play, Swarbrick rounded off an afternoon to remember with her hat-trick and Morecambe’s fifth after reading the through ball well and connecting to slot home.
