Report | Lincoln City 1 Morecambe 2

4 November 2023

The Shrimps come back from a goal down to book a place in the FA Cup Second Round.

Lasse Sorensen opened the scoring with 14 minutes on the clock before Michael Mellon equalised on the stroke of half-time.

Tom Bloxham netted the winner eight minutes into the second half with a calm finish after rounding Lukas Jensen.

Six minutes in, it was the Imps who were presented with the first half-chance; Sorensen found space down the right and latched onto a pinpoint through ball, he looked to get the shot off, but Adam Mayor was on hand to make an important block.

The Shrimps’ first corner of the game led to our first chance as the ball was played short and worked towards David Tutonda, he advanced forward before striking from distance, the ball ultimately sailing over.

Following his earlier chance, it was Sorensen who broke the deadlock on 14 minutes. Danny Mandroiu’s bending cross to the back post found the Lincoln number two who slid the ball beyond Adam Smith to open the scoring.

Smith was called into action nine minutes later after Mandroiu’s free-kick was flying toward the bottom-right corner, but the Shrimps’ shot-stopper got down low and managed to palm the ball away to safety.

Looking for a way back into the game, Bloxham looked to pick out a black and white shirt in the box with a cross from the right, but it was overhit and went behind for a goal kick.

A big chance went begging for the home side as the clock ticked over the half-hour mark. Hamilton didn’t have as much time as he through when Joel Senior looked to dispossess him, the ball landed back at his feet before shooting narrowly wide of the left-hand post.

With two minutes of first half normal time to play, the Shrimps netted an equaliser. Adam Mayor’s corner was headed down by JJ McKiernan into the path of Mellon who was on hand to prod home from close range.

Half-time: Lincoln City 1 Morecambe 1

After just eight second half minutes, the Shrimps were ahead courtesy of Bloxham. The Shrewsbury Town loanee did excellently to round Lukas Jensen before calmly slotting the ball underneath two recovering defenders and into the back of the net.

As the hour-mark passed, Bloxham came agonisingly close to his second of the game, and Morecambe’s third. A first-time volley was struck across Lukas Jensen who had to be at full stretch to keep the ball out.

Moments later, it was a piece of defensive magic by the Imps to deny Bloxham once more. A well struck volley looked destined to find the back of the net, but Adam Jackson was well placed on the line to make a vital clearance.

After his defending heroics, Jackson came inches away to an equaliser on 69 minutes after meeting Mandroiu’s cross at the back post, but his header was off target.

McKiernan was alive to the action and did well to dispossess an unexpecting defender, he played the ball down the right to Bloxham who saw his powerful strike blocked.

Following a mazy run from midfield, Hamilton pulled the trigger with a powerful strike from distance inside the final 10 minutes, the ball flying just over the bar.

Jackson came close to an equaliser on 83 minutes; after rising highest to meet the corner, he could only watch on as the ball crashed against the post.

Seconds after coming on from the bench, substitute Jovon Makama got himself into a great position in the box before glancing a header narrowly wide.

At the other end, Mellon came inches away from wrapping up proceedings with a powerful strike from distance, the ball just about flying over the bar and into the stand behind the goal.

In their last real chance of the game, deep into added time, Paudie O’Connor’s header was comfortably held by Smith.
