Shrimps secure maximum points against Sutton

10 February 2024

Ged Garner's fourth minute goal proved the difference between the Shrimps and Sutton United at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium.

Garner netted his third in a week after nodding home from close range in what was a largely dominant Shrimps' display.

In what proved a blistering start, the Shrimps found themselves ahead inside the opening four minutes. Joel Senior played a neat one-two with Charlie Brown down the right before putting it on a plate for Garner who made no mistake from close range.

It was that man Garner once more who came close four minutes later; after latching onto a through ball, he produced a stinging strike across goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis before the linesman’s flag was raised for offside.

United’s first half chance came on 12 minutes after winning a free kick in a promising position. Up stepped Stephen Duke McKenna who fired the ball well over Archie Mair’s crossbar.

Brown came close to doubling the advantage on 15 minutes after finding himself through on goal, but Bouzanis made a smart same one-on-one.

Seven minutes later, an impeccably controlled free kick over the top allowed Brown the space to run into before his shot, on the angle, proved too high.

Chances proved few and far between for the U’s inside the opening 25 minutes, though pinball did ensue inside the Morecambe box which gave United a glimmer of hope before the Shrimps’ defence cleared the danger.

The final action of the first half saw the away side win a free kick right on the edge of the Morecambe box, though the wall did its job and blocked the strike.

A big chance fell to the way of the Shrimps after 10 second half minutes; substitute Jordan Slew delivered a dangerous cross into the mix and nearly found Gwion Edwards, but it was inches too high.

Moments later, Edwards did have the ball in the back of the net after meeting Joe Adams’ through ball, but the celebrations were cut short as the linesman flagged for offside.

The Shrimps kept pushing and proved a threat going forward as Garner received the ball from the right inside the box, turned and produced a strike on goal, only to see the defender deflect the ball behind.

Edwards was next up with a dangerous drive from the edge of the box, this time Bouzanis was equal to it with a low save down to his left.

With just over 20 minutes to play, another dangerous Slew cross from the left was fizzed in and just about evaded the head of Chris Stokes who was rushing in to meet it.

Looking for a leveller, the ball did drop kindly to the feet of Craig Eastmond inside the Morecambe box, but leaning back, his effort cleared the crossbar.

Slew, who looked busy after coming on, was fouled twice in quick succession. The latter, which was right on the edge of the box, saw Edwards step up to strike, though there was too much elevation and was off target.

As the clock ticked over to 80, Mair was called into action with two comfortable saves in as many minutes, firstly to deny Charlie Lakin before Omari Patrick struck a powerful effort from distance.

Garner, searching for his second brace in a week, nearly wrapped things up in the closing stages. Senior’s ball across found the number nine one-on-one, but Bouzanis managed to stand tall and make the save.
