Youth Report | Morecambe U18 0-2 Accrington Stanley U18

13 January 2024

Two quick-fire strikes from Accrington Stanley in the opening exchanges saw the young Shrimps fall to defeat in Kendal.

Shot-stopper George Pedley returned to the starting line-up after spending the past few months with the first team as backup to Adam Smith.

Ollie Ras’ side created the first opportunity of the contest after only two minutes, as attacking midfielder Jack McKean looked to pick out winger Matty Williams, but the latter was unable to connect.

The deadlock was broken on six minutes as an Accrington attacker swept an effort into the far corner, giving Pedley no chance.

Six minutes later they doubled their advantage as a corner was flicked into the back of the net, creating a two-goal cushion for the visitors.

On 23 minutes, Morecambe had a massive shout turned down for a penalty.

Moments later, midfielder Lennon Dobson made a vital challenge to prevent the visitors grabbing a third at the other end.

McKean came close to pulling one back on 32 minutes. A corner was sent towards the front post and the midfielder lashed towards goal, but his left-footed effort fell just wide.

Half-time: Morecambe 0-2 Accrington Stanley

On 51 minutes, the Shrimps forged their first opening of the second-half. McKean sprayed a ball out wide to midfielder Nathan Mercer, who nodded inside to forward Saul Fox-Akande, but the ‘keeper ultimately collected.

Ollie Ras made his first switch on 58 minutes. Right-back Lewis Ballantyne was forced off through injury and was replaced by Callum Cooney, before attacker Billy Whaite replaced McKean soon after.

Dobson stung the palms of Accrington's ‘keeper from distance on 75 minutes, in what was one of the Shrimps’ better chances on goal in the second-half.

We made our final two changes of the contest with 81 minutes on the clock. Defender Joe Sowerby and midfielder Jack Crane replaced centre-back Leyton Holden and Mercer.

In the closing stages of the game, Pedley produced a top save at his near post to prevent an Accrington fourth.
