Match preview: Rotherham United v Morecambe

23 August 2022

Morecambe return to Carabao Cup action on Tuesday 23 August when they travel to Rotherham United in Round Two of the competition.

The Shrimps head into the game after picking up a point on the road against Oxford United on Saturday, Jensen Weir fired Morecambe ahead with his first goal for the Club, but it was cancelled out eight minutes later by Kyle Joseph.

Morecambe have faced Rotherham a total of 17 times since 1979. The Shrimps have won five of those encounters and four have ended in a draw. Last season, The Millers, who went on to win promotion after securing a second-place finish, did the double over Morecambe.

The opposition

Rotherham United are enjoying an unbeaten start to the 2022/23 campaign. Paul Warne’s side have won one game in the Championship and have drawn the other three. The Millers beat Port Vale 2-1 away from home in the opening round of the Carabao Cup to advance to Round Two of the competition.

Warne has been in charge at the AESSEAL New York Stadium since 2017. During that time, he has guided the club to promotion to the Championship on two occasions, and last season, he also lifted the EFL Trophy.

The 49-year-old had two spells with the Millers as a player. In his first, between 1999-200, Warne made over 200 appearances for the club before rejoining in 2009 after spells with Oldham Athletic and Yeovil Town. Upon his retirement in 2012, Warne joined the coaching staff at the club and took over as caretaker boss in November 2016 before being appointed manager on a permanent basis the following January.

Key players

25-year-old Chiedozie Ogbene is already off the mark with four goals so far this season. The winger, who is a Republic of Ireland international, joined the club in August 2019 from Brentford.

Captain Richard Wood has made over 200 appearances for United. The 37-year-old came through the academy at Sheffield Wednesday and went on the play for Coventry City and Charlton Athletic before returning to South Yorkshire in 2014 when he signed for the Millers. Since signing for the Club, Wood has netted on 19 occassions and provided nine assists.

New arrival Brooke Norton-Cuffy has joined the Millers on loan from Arsenal. The 18-year-old defender spent time on loan at Lincoln City at the beginning of 2022 and has represented England at U16, U18 and U19 level. Despite his young age, Norton-Cuffy has played over 50 professional appearances to-date.

Shrimps’ pre-match thoughts

Derek Adams says his side will go to South Yorkshire with the team spirit and attitude they showed on Saturday.

“They are a very good side, they are in the Championship and they are on a good unbeaten run,” he said.

“They will change a good number of their squad to give other game time, like they did against Port Vale in the round before.

“We will assess them, we will go there with the team spirit and the attitude that we had on Saturday, that will give us the opportunity to progress to the next round."

Meet the officials

Peter Wright will be the man in the middle on Tuesday night. The Merseyside-based official will be assessed by linesmen Stephen Wade and Richard Wigglesworth along with fourth official James Oldham.

Wright has taken charge of four games so far this season, and has awarded 11 yellow cards with no red cards.

The last Shrimps game where Wright took charge was the 1-1 home draw against Gillingham back in February 2022.

Match Reports

Report: Rotherham United 0-1 Shrimps

23 August 2022

Rotherham United 0-1 Morecambe
Carabao Cup - Round Two
The Aesseal New York Stadium
Tuesday 23 August 2022
Kick-Off: 7:45pm
Attendance: 3,808 (172 Shrimps)

The Shrimps set another Sky Bet Championship side packing as Arthur Gnahoua’s second-half strike was enough to send us through to Round Three of this season’s Carabao Cup.

It was the home side who carved open the first opportunity of the game, some smart play down the Shrimps’ right saw Cohen Bramble drill a ball across the box in the direction of Georgie Kelly, but the Millers man could not guide the home.

On the 16th minute the side from the Sky Bet Championship created the next chance, a corner from Scott High found the head of Tom Eaves, his header back into the middle was nodded over the bar by Jamie McCart.

Six minutes later Jamie Lindsay thought he opened the scoring, a through ball from Kelly found the midfielder who broke the Shrimps’ back-line, thankfully his effort was lacking and he could only find the side-netting.

A sweeping move from right to left saw Dylan Connolly swing a ball into the box, full-back Liam Gibson was up from the back spun beautifully on the ball shifting the ball to his favoured left-foot before firing over the crossbar.

Half-time: Rotherham United 0-0 Morecambe

It was an effort from Ollie Rathbone 10 minutes after the break that re-ignited the second period, thankfully for the Shrimps, his volley was wide of the mark.

On the 72nd minute the Shrimps took the lead.

Caleb Watts on from the bench did superbly well to steal the ball off the toes of Lindsay, he set Gnahoua on his way, and with five defenders in his way it would take something special from the Frenchman to beat Vickers, and that is what he did.

He broke into the box and unleashed another special shot, similar to the goal he scored against Fleetwood Town earlier on in the season, with the strike having too much power in it for Vickers to keep out.

The home side rallied after that and threatened to level deep into the half with a succession of corners, only for efforts from Chiedozie Ogbene to end up on the top of Connor Ripley’s goal.
