Match Reports

Morecambe held by Mariners

24 February 2024

Jordan Slew netted a second half equaliser as the Shrimps came from behind to share the points with Grimsby Town.

Danny Rose netted early before Slew met Joel Senior's cross to score a 53rd minute leveller.

The visitors found themselves ahead inside two minutes after Harry Clifton broke free and squared it to Rose who made no mistake from close range.

Morecambe’s first real chance on goal came in the ninth minute as Yann Songo’o brought the ball down and struck from distance but it was straight into the arms of Harvey Cartwright.

Farrend Rawson made a vital block in the 14th minute to stop Grimsby from doubling their lead.

Just minutes later, Joe Adams released Slew with a clever pass to run through and strike a shot which looked to be on goal, but was deflected just wide.

Around the half hour mark, Julian Larsson broke through one-on-one, but Cartwright came off his line and beat him to the ball.

Morecambe continued to apply the pressure as Songo’o’s effort from the edge of the box went wide of goal, and moments later, Gwion Edwards saw a powerful strike palmed away by the goalkeeper.

Half-time: Morecambe 0 Grimsby Town 1

The Shrimps started the second half on the front foot and equalised after Edwards carried the ball with pace down the right hand side. His cross into the box was slotted home by Slew from close range.

Close to the hour mark, Morecambe were back through on goal, as Senior pulled it back for Adams. Our number eight saw his shot blocked, and the rebound fell to Nelson Khumbeni, who shot wide of goal.

The Shrimps continued to apply the pressure with four corners awarded to the home side in a row before Joel Senior tried his luck from outside the box; his effort ultimately comfortably saved by Cartwright.

Edwards came close in the 76th minute, as Cartwright was able to push his powerful strike around the post.

Just two minutes before normal time was up, a Shrimps cross went into the box and hit the bar. The ball fell awkwardly to Hiwula who was unable to find the target.

The Mariners came close in the 92nd minute, as an effort from underneath the crossbar angled over. Soon after, the visitors were awarded a free kick, which went just wide of the target.
