Morecambe make Railwaymen visit

1 March 2024

We face Crewe Alexandra for the first time this season on Saturday 2 March when we make the trip to the Mornflake Stadium.

Morecambe will be hoping to return to winning ways on the road when they head to Cheshire to take on Crewe Alexandra in a Sky Bet League Two clash.

The Shrimps will be hoping to go one better than their draw against Grimsby Town last weekend at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium. On this afternoon, an early Danny Rose goal for the visitors was cancelled out by a Jordan Slew goal in the second half. Neither team could find a winner, and the spoils were ultimately shared.

For the Railwaymen, the weekend presented them with a trip to Meadow Lane to face Notts County. Two first-half goals from Mickey Demetriou and Elliott Nevitt gave the visitors a 2-0 lead going into the break, before ex-Shrimp Josh Austerfield fired home to put Crewe three goals to the good. Jim O’Brien’s goal for the hosts proved nothing more than a consolation, and the match finished 3-1 in the visitors’ favour.

Despite the Shrimps’ having played 33 fixtures so far this season, they are yet to face Crewe Alexandra after the reverse fixture was twice postponed. Morecambe last made the trip to the Mornflake Stadium in the 2021/22 Sky Bet League One season. On this evening, an Arthur Gnahoua brace added to an Adam Phillips’ opener, ultimately resulting in a memorable 3-1 victory for the Shrimps.

The Opposition

The Railwaymen have had a strong campaign so far in Sky Bet League Two, Lee Bell’s side sitting in third position in the standings. 17 wins and 10 draws leave the Cheshire outfit on 61 points, two points behind the league leaders Mansfield Town.

Bell has been at the helm at the Mornflake Stadium since December 2022, after initially taking on the interim manager role in November 2022. He is more than familiar with the club, having started his playing career as a product of the Crewe Alexandra academy, and ultimately making over 140 appearances for the side over two spells during his career.

Key Players

Centre-forward Elliott Nevitt leads the goalscoring charts for the Railwaymen, the 27-year-old bagging 13 goals in all competitions so far this season. Nevitt has been at the Cheshire club since the start of 2023 after joining in the January transfer window from Tranmere Rovers.

Mickey Demetriou has also proven to be a crucial part of the Alex squad, offering both goals and assists from the centre of defence. Demetriou has scored nine and assisted six in all competitions so far this season, since making the move to the Mornflake Stadium in the summer.

Ged Brannan's Pre-Match Thoughts

Morecambe manager Ged Brannan spoke on the difficult challenge ahead, facing an in-form Crewe Alexandra side.

"It is going to be a really tough game," he said. "They're on a great run so it's going to be hard for us, but we've got a good game plan."

"We're going to go there and give it our best shot and see what happens."

"On our day we're a good match for anyone, so tomorrow we will be full of confidence."

The Man in the Middle

Referee Farai Hallam will take charge at the Mornflake Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the official refereeing his fifth game of the season. It will be Hallam’s first time taking charge of a game involving the Shrimps.

He will be flanked by assistants Thomas Harty and Danny Gratton, while fourth official Simon Mather will complete the team of officials.

Team News

Stu Moore, Donald Love, JJ McKiernan, and Brandon Barker remain sidelined for the Shrimps with their respective long-term injuries, midfielder Jake Taylor also a doubt. Dave Tutonda will also miss out due to suspension, following his accumulation of yellow cards.

Match Reports

Shrimps complete courageous comeback at Crewe

2 March 2024

Morecambe came from behind to win a thrilling game against Crewe Alexandra with goals from Joe Adams, Jordan Slew and Farrend Rawson securing the three points.

Crewe went ahead in the first half through Elliott Nevitt after the Crewe striker latched onto a rebound from an Archie Mair save. The home side doubled their lead minutes into the second half through Shilow Tracey’s powerful shot.

Then the turnaround began - first, Joe Adams’ low shot squeezed under the Crewe ‘keeper, then it was Adams again involved as his shot was saved into the path of Jordan Slew, who scored his second goal in tewo games to level. The turnaround was completed by captain Farrend Rawson when he got on the end of a dangerous Joel Senior cross and turned the ball home.

Morecambe had the first opportunity of the game within three minutes after Joe Adams picked up the ball about 20 yards away from goal and drive infield. The midfielder found the run of Joel Senior down the right hand side, whose shot drifted just wide of the far post.

Crewe managed to gain a foothold in the game however Charlie Kirk’s shot from distance failed to trouble Archie Mair.

Adams had a brilliant start to the game and, having again picked the ball up in midfield, he laid a great pass into the path of Ged Garner. Garner’s left-footed shot however was wide.

Despite Morecambe’s strong start to the game, it was Crewe that went ahead after Kirk’s lofted through ball found the run of Elliott Nevitt. The attacker’s first header was saved brilliantly by Archie Mair, but the ‘keeper couldn’t do anything about the rebound.

As the half drew to a close, Rio Adebisi, who was booked earlier in the first period, picked up a loose kick from Mair and struck a dangerous effort just short of the near post.

There was time for one more chance for the Shrimps before the half-time whistle though, as Gwion Edwards’ low shot from the edge of the box was well-saved by Harvey Davies in the Crewe goal.

Half-time: Crewe Alexandra 1 Morecambe 0

Crewe piled on the pressure right from the whistle and doubled their advantage when Shilow Tracey drove infield and lashed a shot towards the goal. Mair managed to get a hand to it, but could only parry the ball into the back of his net.

Nevitt did his best to bag his second goal of the game, but his shot - which came after a driving solo run - was deflected behind for a corner.

Ged Brannan made changes to try and get his side back into thew game, and Jordy Hiwula, who came on in place of Gwion Edwards, nearly made an instant impact. The attacker’s run down the left finished with a perfect cross to the feet of Adams, who had his shot cleared off the line by the Crewe defence.

Mere minutes later however, Morecambe halved the deficit when Max Melbourne’s cross found Adams in exactly the same position, this time midfielder’s strike managed to squeeze under Harvey Davies and across the line.

The Shrimps kept pushing and were level within minutes, winning the ball high up the pitch, Adams found himself in a great position and unleashed a powerful low shot towards goal, Davies could only parry it to the edge of the area where substitute Jordan Slew was waiting to draw the game level.

Mair had to be alert at the other end to turn behind a Lewis Leigh free-kick that looked to be heading into the back of the net, before Josh Austerfield, a former Morecambe loanee, forced another save with a low effort.

Morecambe’s impetus didn’t fade though, and Joel Senior was set down the right following a free-kick and swung in a low cross behind the defence and it was Shrimp’s captain Farrend Rawson who turned it home to complete the turnaround.

Crewe huffed and puffed looking to get back into the game, Courtney Baker-Richardson had a shot from 30-yards easily saved by Mair as Morcambe soaked up the pressure.

There were eight minutes added on at the end of the 90 and Crewe kept pushing for an equaliser. A huge chance fell to Zac Williams following a corner from the left but it went begging with the defender putting his shot over the bar.

An almighty goalmouth scramble in the 95th minute somehow saw Morecambe stay ahead after Austerfield’s shoit was first saved by Mair and then blocked by Bedeau. The rebound was somehow blocked on the line as well before the all-important clearance finally came.
