THrelfall strike earns point

ROBBIE Threlfall earned Morecambe a late point with a stunning late goal at Plainmoor.

The Shrimps’ left back scored with a superb left foot volley from the edge of the area to give his side a welcome point.

A match that was in serious doubt on Friday and passed two pitch inspections on Saturday, burst into life on eight minutes, with the lively Elliot Benyon finding a pass for Michael O’Connor on the right.

The Irishman whipped over a delightful cross and Billy Bodin, making a late surge into the box, saw his header well saved by the giant Barry Roche in Morecambe’s goal.

The visitors had their first sniff of Michael Poke’s goal on 15 minutes, when a Threlfall corner toward the near post was glanced narrowly over by Shrimps’ skipper Mark Hughes.

United quickly returned to the right end of the pitch for a Bodin shot deflected wide. Damon Lathrope hung up an inviting corner and Aaron Downes rose strongly to plant a powerful header into the sodden ground and past Roche.

After a decent spell of Morecambe possession, United broke the shackles when O’Connor picked up the ball and flashed over another fizzing delivery. Hawley attacked the cross and the ball ricocheted in the air, with Roche only just scrambling across to save the situation.

Morecambe needed to improve the tempo and Threlfall sought to inject some hope with a decent curler from distance that dipped narrowly wide in the opening act of the second period.

United immediately responded by throwing men forward and on 67 minutes Bodin guided a header well wide.

Bodin then fired over before Benyon sliced wide from a decent position, as United looked to exploit the space behind Morecambe’s defence.

Bodin then missed a glorious chance when he beat Hughes and Chris McCready to have a free shot on goal but drilled his effort over.

He was made to pay as the Shrimps ended the game on top when Threlfall's superb effort with the outside of his left boot curled beyond Poke and into the top corner to give the Shrimps a hard earned point..
