Shrimps suffer last gasp defeat in nine-goal thriller

THE Shrimps suffered a last gasp defeat in a nine-goal thriller against Wigan this afternoon.

In a game that swung from end both sides served up a treat in an enthralling Final Third Development League Cup game.

Padraig Amond gave the Shrimps the lead in the first minute. A cross from the left found Amond on the edge of the area and the striker produced a fine finish.

The lead lasted just six minutes however when a moment of indecision from Aaron McGowan and goalkeeper Max Povey allowed Declan Poole to steal the ball, round the keeper and slot into an empty net for his first of the game.

Wigan then enjoyed a period of dominance but after missing a number of chances the Shrimps went 2-1 ahead when Poole's poor back pass allowed Jack Sampson a clear run on goal and a simple finish in the bottom corner.

Three minutes later and Latics were level once more. Cosgrove was tumbled in the box after latching onto an excellent Liam Langford pass and cutting inside, before last defender Chris Doyle brought the striker down from behind and Joey Johnson slotted home the spot kick.

Stewart Drummond's side found themselves behind for the first time in the match just one minute before half time.  Cosgrove received the ball on the right by-line, cutting inside to see his left footed effort deflect up over Povey's head and into the path of Matty Hamilton on the line, the Republic of Ireland Under 21 international slamming Latics' third into the roof of the net.

The second half didn't show any signs of slowing down and within seven minutes Latics extended their lead to 4-2, when Alex Cvetkovicl, slid the ball over the line from close range as he got onto the end of a Flores cross.

A minute later and the goal fest continued. This time Morecambe found the net through Amond for his second of the game, a powerful, left footed effort from the inside left of the box which made it 4-3.

The Shrimps then levelled the scores in the 89th minute with a deflected shot from McGowan finding the back of the net.

The action didn't end there however when the Shrimps were stunned by a 90th minute Wigan winner when Poole unleashed a right footed effort which deflected off a defender to beat the stranded Povey.
