The Shrimps, who fielded a number of first team squad members desperate for game time, were given the best possible start with a goal for Adam Campbell after just 47 seconds and from there they held on well to pick up the victory.
Morecambe took the lead with their first attack. Carlos Mendez-Gomez surged through a gaping hole in the Vale defence and squared to Adam Campbell and he scored from 12 yards.
The Valiants were level on 11 minutes. Ben Whitfield picked the ball up on the half-way line, surged forward and played a one two with former Shrimps loanee Anton Forrester before sliding the ball through to Dan Turner who took the ball into the right of the area before drilling it low across the keeper and inside the far post.
The Shrimps hit back with a second on 25 minutes when Charlie Raglan’s sliced clearance allowed Campbell in down the right. He crossed to the centre where Dequan Crockwell made a brilliant save from Lamin Jagne but Mendez-Gomez scored the rebound from close range.
A third goal came on the stroke of half time for Stewart Drummond’s side when Jagne got down the Vale right and crossed low for Kyle Hawley to score with a tap in at the back post.
In an end to end game the visitors reduced the deficit again with a second goal of their own on 53 minutes when Ben Whitfield cut inside from the right and smacked the ball left footed into the top corner from 25 yards.
But once again Morecambe hit back quickly and Jagne made it 4-2 on 55 minutes when he headed home a right win cross from close range.
That proved to be the final goal of an open game after Morecambe’s Niall Maher saved well from Forrester in the final stages of the game as the Shrimps took the spoils.
