9 January 2019

MORECAMBE have signed experienced defender Ritchie Sutton from Tranmere on an 18 month contract.

The centre half began his career with Crewe Alexandra in 2005. He stayed with them for two seasons and had spells on loan with non-league sides Leek Town and Stafford Rangers.

After spending the 2006/07 season at Stafford and winning the Conference North Play-Offs, he would make his temporary deal permanent and played a further 40 games in the following 2007/08 season.

Sutton spent the first half of the 2008/09 season on loan at Halifax Town and made that a permanent deal in the winter however he only stayed at the club for the remainder of that season.

From Halifax, he would move to Nantwich Town in the 2009 summer and the following summer he would sign for his boyhood club Port Vale and made 11 appearances for the League Two side in the 2010/11 season.

He would then go on to play the next four seasons at Mansfield Town who he joined on a free transfer from Port Vale. He made 136 appearances for the side who were the Conference National champions in the 2012/13 season.

In the 2014/15 season he was crowned Mansfield Town Player of the Year before signing for Tranmere Rovers in May 2015 and helping them to promotion to the Football League.

Talking about the deal Shrimps’ boss Jim Bentley said: “Ritchie is a good experienced player at the level and although he is a centre half, he has played a lot of games at right back as well.

“He’s an out and out honest, solid defender who enjoys defending and will certainly add to our squad. We are pleased to have him on board and looking forward to working with him.”

Ritchie will wear the number 12 shirt.
