'Favourite performance of the season' says Robinson

7 November 2021

Manager Stephen Robinson says Saturday’s win against Newport County was his ‘favourite performance of the season’ as they overcome the Sky Bet League Two outfit at the Mazuma Stadium.

Aaron Wildig’s 68th minute strike secured the Shrimps safe passage to the Second Round of this season’s Emirates FA Cup and Robinson was delighted with the way his side went about their business.

“That was my favourite performance of the season, there have been question marks over us in terms of our aggression, grit, steel and determination and we showed that in abundance,” he said.

“We defended set-plays brilliantly, we defended long throws despite the conditions and if I was a Morecambe fan I’d be going ‘every man is playing for that shirt’.

“We will be better on the ball when the conditions get better, but I am really proud of what we have achieved here, the work-rate was outstanding all over the pitch.”

Wildig’s winner was his first touch after coming on as a substitute moments earlier, and Robinson has praised the way the midfielder has dealt with the adversity he has faced this campaign.

“The credit goes to Aaron [Wildig] not me, I was tempted to start him - what he does give us is a it more experience,” he added.

“He has scored a lot of goals at this level, scored a lot of goals last season as well, he has just been so unfortunate with injuries, every time he gets near the first-team he gets injured.

“Hopefully his luck has turned, I think he is a really clever footballer that can play a big part in us going forward.”
