Adams | We Must Replicate Recent Performances

4 November 2022

Derek Adams says the Shrimps must perform against Sheffield Wednesday like they did against Barnsley, Wycombe Wanderers and Derby County recently.

Morecambe travel to Hillsborough on Tuesday night to face the Owls in the FA Cup First Round, almost 11 years on from when the teams last met at this stage of the competition.

While the manager is expecting a tough clash, given Darren Moore’s outfit currently sit third in Sky Bet League One, Adams believes his side can progress to the next round if they match recent performances.

“We’ve come off some really good performances,” he said.

“We won against Barnsley who were sixth in the league at the time, Wycombe drawing away from home and then the other night against Derby, a fantastic performance to come away with a draw.

“We’re going to have to do exactly the same against Sheffield Wednesday, we understand the abundance of talent they have in their squad.

“It’s the FA Cup, they might make changes to the squad, they’ve got another big game as we do on Wednesday night against Southampton, we’ve got MK Dons, but it’s an FA Cup game everyone’s looking forward to.”

Last season, the Shrimps overcame Newport County and Buxton in the opening two rounds before travelling to Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur in the third round, an achievement the gaffer is looking to recreate.

He added: “Going into the FA Cup, we would’ve all liked a different tie.

“You don’t want to have one of the biggest teams in the FA Cup in the first round, you don’t want to be away from home, we’ve got them both.

“That’s just the beauty of the draw, in the past, we’ve been able to go away from home to smaller teams, progress through the rounds and get to play the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham.

“Sheffield Wednesday will have thought a wee bit of the same way.

“They’ll have seen the results we’ve had this season and will understand when we come up against teams who are better financially, have bigger squads, have come down a division, we’ve tended to do well.”
