Shrimps share spoils in Boxing Day Bradford clash

26 December 2023

The Shrimps leave Bradford with a point after a second half Bradford City comeback.

James Connolly and JJ McKiernan scored a goal each in the opening 18 minutes and lead at the break, but two second half goals for the hosts saw the spoils shared.

The Shrimps came out of the blocks quickly and found themselves a goal up after three minutes. Adam Mayor’s free kick was sent into a packed penalty area, the hosts couldn’t clear before Connolly found the bottom corner from close range.

Looking for a quick response, Tyler Smith found himself in a promising position and produced an effort on target from the left, forcing Adam Smith into a clever save to deny the Bantams an immediate equaliser.

Smith again registered an effort on nine minutes after connecting with Jonathan Tomkinson’s cross, though his glancing header sailed comfortably wide.

Moments later, Jordan Slew did excellently well to carry the ball to the by-line before crossing a pinpoint ball into the path of McKiernan who slammed home to extend the advantage.

Again, after conceding, the Bantams nearly halved the deficit instantly as Emmanuel Osadebe raced through on goal, only to be denied by an onrushing Smith in the Morecambe goal.

Midway through the first 45, a free kick was sent deep toward Tomkinson at the back post, his header lacked power and proved a comfortable collection for Smith.

It was nearly three on 35 minutes as Mayor sent a great cross into the box, aiming for Slew and Tom Bloxham, but a defender won the race to the ball and turned it behind for a corner which came to nothing.

After advancing into the Morecambe box, Andy Cook looked as though he had a clear sight on goal, though just as he looked to release the shot, there was Connolly on hand to make a vital interception which allowed Joel Senior to clear.

Captain Richie Smallwood then curled a promising cross into a dangerous area which was crying out for a touch form a man in claret and amber, but it just about evaded everyone and went behind for a goal kick.

After an initial corner was cleared, Eli King nearly stunned the University of Bradford Stadium with a powerful strike on the rebound, only for the ball to take a deflection off an opposition man and away to safety.

Half-time: Bradford City 0 Morecambe 2

In the opening stages of the second half, City put together a well worked move before substitute Clarke Oduor was presented with an opportunity on goal, though his strike took a deflection off a teammate before flying over the bar.

Four minutes before the hour mark, Cook took a tumble in the box for the hosts; the referee put the whistle to his mouth before rightfully booking Bradford’s number nine for diving.

The home side pulled one back on 59 minutes. Cook nodded down the cross and there was Oduor to pounce upon with a first-time finish from 10-yards.

Searching for his, and Bradford’s, second of the game, Oduor tried his luck from distance, though a key deflection took the sting out of the strike and allowed Smith an easy claim of the ball.

Just a few moments later, Smallwood sent a teasing cross from a free kick into a crammed Shrimps’ box where a City man rose highest, but couldn’t keep the header down.

With eight minutes left of normal time to play, Halliday netted the equaliser after meeting a cross at the back post and side-footing home.

Eli King was called upon in the closing stages of normal time after reacting quickest to a rebound following a Bradford effort which crashed against the bar, the Wales U21 man just got his foot to the ball in time to make the clearance.
