Spoils shared between the Shrimps and Hatters

9 December 2023

Stockport County equalise late to cancel out Michael Mellon's 70th minute goal in horrific conditions.

A well-worked counter attack saw Mellon slot home his 13th in all competitions before Kyle Wootton convert an 87th minute leveller.

The opening quarter of an hour yielded little in the way of clear-cut opportunities, with both sides seemingly struggling in challenging conditions.

The visitors enjoyed the lion’s share of possession, but were restricted to efforts from distance by a robust Shrimps defence, with shots from Odin Bailey and Ryan Croasdale dealt with routinely by Smith.

An early setback for Stockport saw Antoni Sarcevic go down injured, before ultimately being replaced by Callum Camps.

The first real opening of the game came just before the half hour mark, when Bailey’s fierce strike from range was deflected towards goal, forcing an excellent reflex save from Adam Smith.

The Shrimps then began to find their rhythm, with Adam Mayor and JJ McKiernan both hammering efforts toward goal. Mayor flashed his shot just wide, while McKiernan’s low drive forced a full-stretch save from Ben Hinchliffe

Despite the opening 45 minutes yielding chances at both ends, the two sides remained deadlocked at the interval.

The visitors looked to carve an opening from the outset as the second period got underway, with Isaac Olaofe going down under duress in the area, but appeals for a penalty were swiftly dismissed by John Busby.

As conditions worsened, chances became few and far between as both sides fought for an opener.

Stockport came closest just after the hour mark, when Bailey’s in swinging delivery from the corner very nearly snuck in, Smith adjusting quickly to turn it over the crossbar.

Ged Brannan’s men soaked up all Stockport could throw at them, and having looked dangerous on the counter all afternoon, took their chance emphatically on the 70-minute mark.

David Tutonda received the ball on the edge of the area and rolled a perfectly weighted ball through to in-form Michael Mellon, who set himself, and coolly slotted home beyond an oncoming Hinchliffe to put the Shrimps 1-0 to the good.

Despite being repeatedly foiled by the Shrimps back line, the visitors persisted with deliveries into the area. Ultimately, this disciple paid off, Wooton sliding in at the back post to bring Dave Challinors men level.

A frantic conclusion provided both sides with opportunities to take the spoils; Bailey’s rangy, curling effort flashed inches wide, and an added time corner for Morecambe was scrambled clear by Stockport.

After 96 minutes of action, there was nothing to split the sides, and play was halted for the final time.
