Shrimps succumb to Walsall defeat

20 February 2024

The Shrimps fall to a first away defeat in five league games after conceding three without response to Walsall at the Poundland Bescot Stadium.

Goals from Ross Tierney, Jamille Matt and Emmanuel Adegboyega earned the Saddlers the points as the Shrimps' recent run of good results away from the Mazuma Mobile Stadium came to an end.

Morecambe started the better with Julian Larsson's right wing cross begging for a touch in front of goal and Charlie Brown seeing a shot well blocked.

Walsall looked a threat themselves going forward with goalkeeper Archie Mair forced into an early save as he tipped over Isaac Hutchinson's 20 yard drive on 12 minutes.

Mair could do nothing to prevent the home side taking the lead moments later however, as Hutchinson's shot was blocked only for the ball to fall perfectly for Tierney to side foot home from 12 yards.

The Shrimps hit back with Brown's goal bound effort well blocked by Taylor Allen before the hosts struck again on 26 minutes. Josh Gordon's persistence to keep the ball in play paid off as he managed to squeeze a cross to the far post from the byline for Matt to score at full stretch.

Morecambe continued to press with Slew seeing a shot deflected inches wide and Adams being denied by another excellent Walsall block.

It was the Saddlers who went closest to scoring the third goal of the game as Hutchinson broke through down the middle only to see his final effort blocked by Chris Stokes.

Half-time: Walsall 2 Morecambe 0

The Shrimps started the second half on the front foot and put the home defence under pressure.

Brown saw another shot blocked and David Tutonda blazed a long range shot over the bar.

Morecambe were undone for a third time on 65 minutes as Matt's effort hit the post but rebounded perfectly for Adegboyega to convert from close range.

Walsall went close to a fourth nine minutes from time when substitute Douglas James-Taylor looked sure to score from close range but Tutonda produced a last-gasp block.
