Lack of clinical edge cost Shrimps says Adams

27 August 2022

Derek Adams said his Shrimps side needed to be more clinical in front of goal against MK Dons this afternoon.

The visitors found themselves two goals to the good at half time, thanks to a Will Grigg brace on 16 and 36 minutes respectively.

A half time tactical change, and a substitution, saw Morecambe start the second half on top, with several chances falling their way, without being able to capitalise.

Conor Grant netted on 62 minutes following a counterattack before substitute Matthew Dennis rounded off the scoring for the visitors five minutes later.

“In the second half, we got into the game and created a lot of good opportunities,” Adams said.

“We probably should have got back in the game, even in the first half with Ryan Delaney’s header, it was a great save from their goalkeeper.

“Over the afternoon, I thought they [MK Dons] were very clinical when they had their opportunities, and we weren’t so good in front of goal.

“We had a lot of chances in the game, very good chances at that, we probably should’ve scored a few goals but unfortunately today we didn’t.

“If we would’ve got back to 2-1, it would’ve obviously helped us and we had the opportunity to do that on a number of occasions, we weren’t able to get that and then we got counterattacked.

“MK Dons were clinical and deserved to win.”

Whilst his side were unable to find a breakthrough during the game, Adams praised his players for not giving up, and recognised new arrival Kieran Phillips and Academy player Adam Mayor on their respective debuts.

He added: “I thought the players still kept going, they still wanted to try and get a goal and we still had opportunities on goal, we should’ve scored today but, in the end, they’ve [the visitors] been very clinical.

“It’s not easy to come on in the game he [Phillips] did, we were 2-0 down at half time, and then he came on and had a couple of opportunities, he probably should’ve scored, but in the end, we’ve other players in the team that should’ve done likewise.

“I just gave him [Mayor] a couple of minutes at the end, he’s been training with us, he was in the squad on Tuesday night.

“He was unfortunate not to have featured on Tuesday night, but we gave him some minutes today.”
