Born in Liverpool, McMahon came through a youth apprenticeship with Everton, before moving into semi-professional football. Between 1983 and 1996, he played for clubs such as Altrincham, Morecambe, Runcorn and Southport.

The retired midfielder continued his career as part of the coaching teams at Liverpool FC Reserves, Shrewsbury Town and Tranmere Rovers. He also had brief stints as caretaker manager for the latter two sides.

In 2019, John McMahon arrived at the Shrimps, alongside Derek Adams, as the assistant manager. He left the Club in December 2021, but McMahon wasn’t away for long, as just two months later he returned with Derek Adams after the pair were rehired after the departure of Stephen Robinson and Diarmuid O’Carroll.
