Looking ahead to the Shrimps Women's clash against Altrincham

22 March 2024

The Shrimps Women are back in Mazuma Mobile Stadium action this Sunday against Altrincham in the Alliance Design and Print Plate.

The two sides will face off in a bid to progress to the next round of the competition. This is the final preliminary stage before the winner will be put in the hat for the first round.

Following defeat last time out against Workington in the league, the Shrimps will be looking to get back to winning ways. It was a closely contested match with chances for either side throughout. Workington scored the only goal of the match on 40 minutes and, despite a late chance to equalise in the second half added time through Freya Lucas, the visitors took home all three points.

Altrincham travel to the Mazuma following a difficult 19-2 loss to NWWRFL Division One South current league leaders Wythenshawe last Sunday. It was a positive start from Altrincham as they equalised through Holly Lloyd just seconds after going 1-0 down. She got her second to make it 4-2, though Wythenshawe dominated the rest of the proceedings to secure victory.

The Opposition

Altrincham FC Women currently sit 10th place in the NWWDRL Division One South on five points after registering one win and two draws in their 17 matches played so far this season.

We host them in the Plate following their Alliance Design and Print Cup campaign coming to an end earlier this month when they lost 3-2 to Northwich Vixens Women.

Key Players

Despite the result last Sunday, one player impressed in the early stages of their match. It was Holly Lloyd who scored a brace, including an important equaliser seconds after going 1-0 down, which kept them in the game at the time.

Pre-Match Thoughts from the Shrimps

Captain Yasmine Carswell spoke about how the team are feeling ahead of Sunday.

“It’s such a great opportunity to play at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium,” she said.

“We are excited to show everyone what we can do. It would be amazing to get some new people watching and to hopefully inspire the younger generation.”

Erin Lightfoot said that the opportunity to play at the stadium can 'show how far the women’s game has come', whereas Gabrielle Johnson said she was 'incredibly excited and relishing the challenge of Altrincham in the Alliance Design and Print Plate on Sunday'.

Her Game Too

Both the Men’s and Women’s fixtures this weekend are dedicated to celebrating the work of Her Game Too. An organisation that is working to eradicate sexism within the game.

We share the belief that there is no place for discrimination in football, and we are committed to doing all we can to be inclusive.
